EXODUS is a very ambitious novel with 3 very distinct and stunningly realized settings: a drowning island in the North Atlantic, the high-tech sky city of New Mungo, and a shadow world beneath New Mungo where a few relics of the past, including a cathedral and a university, still exist.
Like the best of the genre, Exodus is both imaginative and profound. The future technology is inventive but believable, as is the geology of the flooded Earth. While this does have some naïveté of younger fiction ("steal a uniform, so we can sneak around in disguise,") Bertagna depicts intense emotions with sophistication (including death, despair and sensual love). Exodus by Julie Bertagna is a compelling coming-of-age tale in a world ravaged by catastrophic sea level rise. The colorful characters, the contrasting low-tech and high-tech communities of survivors, and the long and interesting heroic journey of a young woman displaced by climate change, come together to make this an entertaining and thought-provoking story. Exodus by Julie Bertagna was a very difficult read; it was slow, boring, illogical and dull. The writing and story telling were both exceedingly clunky and awkward to read. The characters were empty shells with no personality or characterisation. The story was ever so dull and could have been easily concluded in 50 pages.
